It was Dr. Seuss’s birthday this week and the kids have been celebrating all week at school. Today was “dress up like your favorite Seuss character” day in MonkeyBoy’s class, so I made outfits for both boys. I think they were a big hit!

I was also feeling the need to use my kitchen creativity skills this week, so I asked the teachers if it was okay to bring in a Seuss themed snack. After receiving a resounding “yes!”, I made Cat in the Hat cookies – oreos dipped in white chocolate and topped with a marshmallow that had both ends dipped in melted cherry chips. I bet the kids will be hyper after snack time!

We attended a birthday party today for one of MonkeyBoy’s friends. I’m trying to make all of our gifts this year and I wasn’t sure what to make for this particular little girl, especially since her mother is a very talented seamstress and crafter. As I was going through ideas, I remembered that when my mother visited last fall we went on a tour of area quilting shops and at one she had bought me a set of patterns for animal towels. I decided that would make the perfect gift for this little girl – she could use it as a towel/pool cover-up or simply wear it in her dress-up play.

I went with the ladybug pattern, which I just love. I felt a little guilty giving a present that is most likely going to require its own load of laundry since I’m afraid the red will bleed. I did pick out colorfast fabric, so hopefully it won’t cause too much extra work for the birthday girl’s mom.

MonkeyBoy was kind enough to model for me so that I could get a few pictures. I think I’ll have to make him one of his own soon.

MonkeyBoy only has school once this week, since Thursday is a religious holiday, so I only had to come up with one snack instead of two. I took the easy route and made “cracker carrots”. I think I completed them all in under 15 minutes.

I did get cutesy and use the organic bunny crackers instead of standard goldfish. I couldn’t pass up the irony of a carrot filled with bunnies.

Then for another friend, I made Mickey Mouse themed cupcakes and a cookie cake.

Finally, I made some soft blocks for a baby shower gift. I was so excited with how these turned out. I made them extra tactile by putting things inside them, one had a bell, one had crinkle paper, and one had a squeaker. These were made with fabric scraps that I brought home from my mom’s stash. She had some wonderful fabric to choose from and I hope to go back and borrow some more soon.

MonkeyBoy decided that he wanted to get in on the crafting, so he stole my bag of stuffing. Using kitchen tools from his play kitchen set, he emptied a bunch of stuffing onto the hallway floor, telling us that he was making a polar bear.

I’m trying to make most of the gifts we give this year. I have a craft room – I need to use it! I’m hoping to get ahead enough to make the gift packaging too, but as a habitual procrastinator I’m not sure that’s going to happen.

I did get a few gifts made last week. One of my friends let me come over and raid her fabric stash to get scraps to use for a project.

I used the scraps in my die cut machine to make Build-A-Bear bears and letters to apply on tote bags.

I also made up some felt food while I was at my parents’ house. Mom has a new sewing machine that is fancier than mine, and it was fun to play with it. Her machine has a button to cut the thread for you – very cool! I didn’t get a very good picture of the food, but I’ll post it any way to remind myself what all I attempted. There are two lunch sacks, a red bag filled with potato chips, ravioli with sauce, a ho-ho, a chocolate chip cookie, a fried egg, and a pancake with syrup and butter.

The final project I was able to finish was a superheroine-style cape. It’s pink on one side and green on the other, and I was beyond tickled that I could figure out how to sew it with different colored thread and bobbin so that the colors matched up correctly. I thought for sure I’d mix it up and have the pink thread on the green side, but I did it right the first time! The project wasn’t without difficulties though – I couldn’t get the fusible webbing to adhere on the felt piece and turned up my iron to see if that would help only to melt the felt into a giant lumpy mess. Luckily, I had extra and was able to get it to work on my second attempt.

I’m so exhausted tonight. It’s been a long weekend. I had two parties yesterday – one was a birthday party for one of MonkeyBoy’s friends and the other was an annual holiday party with a group of my friends (some of whom were also at the birthday party so I got to spend extra time with them!). I was excited to be able to squeeze in enough time to make the birthday girl’s present.

Today MonkeyMan’s father came to visit for awhile and we went out for a family dinner. MonkeyBoy hardly ate anything and has been kind of off all day. He woke from midnight to 1AM and then woke for the day at 5:30 this morning. He’s also been sniffling some and I fear he caught a bug from a germy looking kid at a restaurant playground on Friday. I don’t get why parents bring their kids to playgrounds when they are sick, and especially don’t get parents who just leave their little kids alone in said playgrounds. This germy kid looked like he had a rash on his face and he even bit one of MonkeyBoy’s playmates. And he looked to be around two years old with no parent in sight. Sheesh!

I’ve been doing a lot of cooking and freezing of foods to make weekday dinners easier. I made a crockpot pasta meal right before we had to leave town last month so I froze it in two large plastic containers to eat later. Today I was messing in the freezer trying to get the ice machine to unclog and managed to knock both of the full, heavy containers off the top shelf. I caught one, but the second one landed square on my big toe. I yelped and jumped in so much pain that I ended up throwing the second container onto the ground, shattering it as well. So not only do I have a possible broken toe, I ruined one of our dinners for the week. I’m curious to find out what color my toe is in the morning. If it’s too bad, I guess I’ll get a doctor’s visit added to the coming week’s schedule.

Speaking of toes, I’m slightly addicted to footie pajamas for MonkeyBoy. I couldn’t resist buying him this pair over the weekend. How cute are those moose?

I sure do spend a lot of time in the car. As proof, I hit a milestone this weekend.

The digital number flipping is not nearly as exciting as the old rotary analog odometer dial turning over.

I made robot cupcakes for a birthday party this weekend. I think they turned out pretty cute, if I do say so myself.

The birthday boy had a pinata. MonkeyBoy had never seen a pinata before and he was very impressed. As he told his MonkeyMan afterward, “They had a robot. And I pulled strings. And candy fell out! Candy, candy, candy! Rolls, Daddy!” MonkeyBoy’s current favorite candy is “Rolls!”, more commonly known as Tootsie Rolls. He scooped up a huge handful of them from the pinata spillings, but luckily his hands are relatively small so that only amounted to about six pieces of candy. Enough to make him feel important, but not enough to keep him on a sugar high for days.

It snowed last week. For about two minutes. We were on the road (see #1) and by the time I got us safely pulled over and MonkeyBoy unbuckled, the snow had stopped. I’m jealous of my friends with snow pictures. But hopefully there will be real snow at my folks’ house when we go this spring. Papop has an adventure planned for MonkeyBoy.

I was so proud of my little guy this past weekend. I had purchased some toys to give away to charity including a very large Tonka firetruck. I took MonkeyBoy to a holiday sing-along and toy donation drive and we took the firetruck to donate. I prepped him on the way there, but was expecting kicking and screaming when it was time to give the toy up. Instead, he was the perfect little gentleman. He carried the truck from the car to the donation spot (even though the truck was a big as he was) and he shyly handed it over to the head of the toy drive. He never asked to keep it or play with it. He just kept repeating snippets of what I’d told him on the drive there “This for other kid. I share this truck. Someone else gets to play with it. It got no batteries. The other kid’s mommy will get it batteries. She will fix it.” The battery part was all ad-libbed on his part, the toy was not battery-operated. He just decided it needed batteries and came up with his own resolution about what would happen to the truck. As he handed over the toy, I heard a reporter’s camera going nuts taking shots, but it appears MonkeyBoy didn’t make the cut for the newspaper’s story the next day.

I signed myself up for a craft fair next week. I have no craft items currently made to sell. I think I may be a little bit insane to throw in a craft fair with everything else going on this month.

I took some of MonkeyBoy’s toys to the church nursery to share, since we have limited space in the house and he is blessed with many toys. I caught him playing with the egg game we had given him on his second birthday. I remember when he didn’t know how to use it. On Sunday, he laid down on the floor and solved it right away.

I shot about six hundred pictures in two days trying to get one for the Christmas card. I had to bribe him with candy and ice cream.

Without bribes, I kept getting shots like this:

or this one where he said “I’m tired. I’m going to take a nap now.”

I made three batches of Chex mix tonight so that I wouldn’t have to store the boxes of cereal in the pantry. Why can I get four batches of Chex mix from the rice and corn Chex, but only three from the wheat? Can’t they make the wheat boxes a little bigger? And why is wheat my favorite now when it was the one I used to pick out and throw away as a child? And why did my mom make it with Wheat Chex when no one in the family would eat the wheat ones?

I made cookies for a cookie exchange this evening. There’s a social event tomorrow that needed food donations, so I just donated all the cookies I should have brought home to the cause. I was more interested in the fun of baking and seeing what everyone else made, rather than actually bringing home and eating 5 dozen cookies. I’m in a baking mood and I think I’ll make twelve Cookies of Christmas this year. I based my recipe choice tonight on what ingredients I had at home. The cream cheese needed to be used up, so I made chocolate sandwich cookies.

This week was our week to provide snacks at MonkeyBoy’s preschool. I had no idea what to provide for snacks, so I decided to be creative. Everyone ooh’d and aah’d over the snacks and today the teachers told me that I really set the bar high for everyone else. The first day I made strawberry mice with cheese and the second day I made mock caramel apples.

Parents also have to provide homemade playdough one month out of the year, so I went ahead and signed up for September to get it out of the way. It was so much easier than I remembered it being from my childhood. I think we’ll be making it more often – MonkeyBoy and I had a blast playing with it on the kitchen counter.

He seems to really enjoy going to school. On non-school days he stuffs his backpack full of toys and then runs around. He even yells out “Let’s run!” before he takes off.

MonkeyBoy loves to carry things. He especially loves to carry things in bags. He calls backpacks “pack-packs” and delights in dragging around the ones that MonkeyMan and I use to take our things to work.

MonkeyBoy started pre-school last week and one of the things he needed was his own backpack. We have one that was a freebie at some pregnancy fair we attended while expecting Monkeyboy, but it is embroidered with the name of a child care chain. I dislike using my son for advertising, especially for something he didn’t even attend, so I wanted to get him a different backpack for school. I found one at the Disney outlet on sale that would have worked but the fabric kind of creeped me out and then there’s that advertising thing again.

So then I wondered if I could sew a backpack. A quick Google search directed me to to the most wonderful tutorial at Made By Rae. Since I had a little spending cash in my Paypal account I purchased the tutorial and am so glad I did. I’ve never done binding (didn’t even know what it was or where to find it at the fabric store), zippers, or quilting (the bottom), but I was able to start and finish a backpack for MonkeyBoy today – laboring over the sewing machine on Labor Day. I used leftover scraps of fabric from MonkeyBoy’s bedding, fused to canvas (something else new!).

There are things I’d do better next time around and I need to find a way to finish the interior seams to keep them from fraying, but I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. I’m a little sad I won’t get to see MonkeyBoy’s reaction since I’ll be at work in the morning. Hopefully he’ll like it.
