Girls live there.” I have no idea how he’s figuring out so much about the world, but, frankly, I could do without him having some of this knowledge so soon.

Since I haven’t been feeling well, MonkeyBoy has been watching more television than is normal in our house. The other day I let him pick out whatever DVD he wanted to watch and he chose “Schoolhouse Rock”. I didn’t know if he’d like it, but he sat mesmerized for the length of the DVD affording me a nice doze in and out on the couch.

A few days later he started asking if he could watch the newspaper show. I had no idea what he was talking about. He kept insisting that there was a show about a newspaper, one “with a face”. I finally figured out he wanted to watch “Schoolhouse Rock” again, in particular, the “I’m Just a Bill” sketch.

It’s been a few more days since he’s watched the DVD, but he’s still talking about it. Tonight he was stalling going to bed and telling stories. He broke into a little dance back and forth and blurted out, “I’ll do this when I die” and then he fell to the floor. We’ve never really discussed death with MonkeyBoy and this comment disturbed us. We exchanged raised eyebrows and asked MonkeyBoy to tell us where he learned about that. His response, “from the newspaper!” We still didn’t understand and asked him to tell us again and he said “From the newspaper. The one with the face.” Oh, yes, in the “I’m Just a Bill” sketch the Bill (the “newspaper with a face” in our world) does do a little dance and sings about how he will die if he doesn’t get passed in committee. Our little guy sure is impressionable and has a great memory!

My dad called on Friday and asked if he could come to visit for the weekend. Considering they live 1000 miles away, it was an unusual request. Turns out he was flying for work and ended up stranded during his layover due to bad weather, so he rented a car and drove the four hours from the layover airport to our house Friday night and then drove back on Sunday to fly home.

Monkeyboy was surprised (and a little freaked) to have Papop walk into his room on Saturday morning, but he quickly warmed up and had fun playing all weekend. On Sunday morning they were both playing quietly upstairs. All of a sudden MonkeyBoy yelled down the stairs, “Mommy! That man has his pants off!”. Perplexed and thinking I misunderstood, I asked for clarification. He again yelled, “Mommy! That man has his pants off!”. Knowing my father, I thought there must be some sort of reasonable explanation, but MonkeyMan went upstairs to investigate anyway. He returned with two Legos from the Lego bucket that lives upstairs. Sure enough “that [lego] man” did have his pants off.

I was greeted this morning with a tackle hug and the exclamation “Happy Smother Day, Mommy!” I’m hoping MonkeyBoy just got the words a little mixed up and doesn’t think I’m too much of a smothering helicopter parent.

I ran out of anti-nausea meds, so I spent most of the day laying down. I did get to finish a book, which was a treat since I rarely read books after grad school ruined reading for me. I’d been reading The Help, which was an entertaining but fast read. I’m a little disappointed in the ending, but I think that was more because the book was designed with acknowledgments and comments from the author directly at the end of the book and I’d thought I’d be getting six more pages of ending. So when I came to the last of the story, I thought “That’s it? I want to read more!”.

As far as Mother’s Day goes, it was a calm day. MonkeyBoy was excited with my present, a 90 piece Toy Story themed Lego set of Green Army Men and a jeep. He let me put it together but then proclaimed that I should share it with him and he entertained himself with it the rest of the day. He even took it to bed with him tonight, a sign of a really good toy.

We’ve been swamped with work this week. MonkeyMan’s computer labs were broken and needed lots of attention. I had several major time-sensitive tasks at Job #1, more development tasks at Job #2, and then I was asked to make a cake for a friend’s daughter’s birthday today so my weekend is just now starting. Here’s the cake I spent my morning on…

I offered MonkeyBoy an extra clown cookie and he refused it, instead whining “I want a clown on a motorcycle!” If he’d requested that before they were baked I could have pulled it off, but he was out of luck since they were already made and I had no dough left over. I’m not exactly sure why he thought the clown needed to be riding a motorcycle, but he sure was insistent that I’d done it wrong.

I think he’s definitely a techie like his folks.

And in the car this week, MonkeyBoy and I were chatting while running errands. MonkeyMan was at home playing with his new lemon server (which has been returned and we are anxiously awaiting the replacement).

MonkeyBoy announced, “Daddy’s playing head games at home”.
“Oh?” I responded, “What do you mean?”
“He’s playing head games. On the TV.”
“Do you mean he’s playing boxing? Is he playing Mommy’s new boxing game?”
“Yes! Head games!”

It’s MonkeyBoy’s week to take snacks again at preschool. You know what that means, more overachieving for me!

My parents are afraid the other mothers aren’t going to like me.

I started a new job today. It’s in a different unit within my same department and it’s in addition to my current job. So far I really like it. It could develop into something permanent when my current job ends and they are letting me work from home with only occasional office time. It was way too good to pass up, but I will lose some of my goofing off time. Probably not a bad thing though – I’m happier when I have more to do.

They must have been studying the first Thanksgiving in preschool today. MonkeyBoy came home with braids.

I think MonkeyBoy may have a splinter from his peeping at the neighbor girls last week. He’s too wiggly to look at it closely though.

I dislike potty training. A lot. He’s been getting up between 3:30 and 5:00 in the morning and wanting to go to the potty because we promised him Bob the Builder trucks if he goes #2 in the potty. He will sit and sit and sit. We spent the evening of my birthday at the local bookstore picking out potty books to read. Nothing like celebrating another year of adulthood by reading potty stories aloud in public to ensure that you’ll be okay with reading them over and over and over again at home. So far, I still like our choices: Even FireFighters go to the Potty and The Potty Train. Yes, he knows them by heart now and gets upset if I skip a page.

I like the handwashing after going potty. How cute is this?

It’s even cuter when he does it bare-butted, but I don’t feel like embarrassing him by capturing that on film.

We’ve been watching the latest TMBG DVD and we love it that MonkeyBoy now knows the names of all the planets. He also goes around yelling out “Science is REAL!”.

Sharing is still a difficult concept in our house. Last month a friend came over to pick up a cake and brought her one-year-old. MonkeyBoy ran to great them at the door with “Hi, friend. Don’t touch my toys!” He also hasn’t been sleeping through the night anymore and often wakes up screaming. One night he was yelling “No, no, [friend at school's name], don’t touch my trains!”.

We bought a train set today to go around our Christmas tree, and we also bought a small tree for MonkeyBoy to decorate. I told him that we wouldn’t be able to play with them until Thanksgiving, which is still over a week away. When we got home and he realized I was serious that we couldn’t open the new things today, he started crying hysterically, “Oh, no! It’s not Thanksgiving. After weekend! Not Thanksgiving yet!” I was pretty impressed with his understanding of time and weeks. It’s going to be a long 9 days until he can open those boxes, I fear.

I made it to ten before ten. Off to bed for me.

Today was the last day of a 30% off sale at Old Navy, so MonkeyBoy and I headed out this afternoon while MonkeyMan was attending a conference. MonkeyBoy has grown so much that he has poked holes in the feet of all of his footie pajamas, so I thought we might be able to get a few pairs on sale. I had thought of switching him to footless PJ’s, but he gets so excited with the footie ones. His first comments when I pulled them out on our first cool night in over half a year was “Wow! My jammies have shoes! That’s cool!”

I let him pick out a couple pairs of jammies to get and chose a size 3T since I figured those would fit him. After he put them in the cart, he kept asking me to “Go to that other room”. I couldn’t figure out what he meant but he was insistent. Then he said “Go to that other room, Mommy! Try on!”. Ah, he wanted to go into the fitting room. The fitting rooms were all full and we had to wait about five minutes in line to get in. I asked him a couple of times if he was sure he wanted to try them on and he would just smile at me and nod his head.

Once we got in the fitting room, I only removed his shoes and slipped the jammies on over his clothes to save time and hassle. He was so very excited to try on the jammies that he danced all over the fitting room floor. I only had my phone with me, so here’s a blurry shot of my happy shopper!
