The Witching Hour

The longest hour of the day always seems to be the hour right before dinner. The kids are whiny, there’s nothing good on PBS, and I’m stressing about either figuring out what to cook or getting the food made.

However, for the past month or so it’s become my favorite part of the day. We are having wonderful weather (when it doesn’t rain). So I’ve been quickly throwing food in the oven and then heading outside with the kids for the “witching hour”. We spend most of the time on our new backyard playscape and the whines turn into fits of giggles instead. And when we come in, the house smells good and dinner is ready to be pulled out of the oven and eaten.

Setting the bar

I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to top this year’s costume for MonkeyBoy.

He’s become slightly obsessed with a fan mashup video on YouTube that combines Thomas the Tank Engine and Transformers. He’s been saying that he wants to be “OpThomas Prime” for Halloween for over a month now, so it was up to MonkeyMan and I to bring his vision to life.

I think we nailed it.

Pumpkin Patch 2011

We made an afternoon trip to the Pumpkin Patch today. Neither was very interested in having his picture taken. The big one wanted to run around and the little one wanted to eat leaves.

Not quite five. It’s a tough age. Especially when a new baby has been added to the family. MonkeyBoy struggles with whether to be a baby or a big boy.

Take dinner, for example. He’s eating corn on the cob. And experiencing the delight of using a spork for the first time. All while sitting in the baby high chair and wearing the baby’s bib.

The little guy turned eight months old this past week. He’s rolling, scooting, sitting, vocal about eating, and so very cuddly.

Busy Weekend

We had a bunch of firsts over the weekend.

MonkeyBoyToo enjoyed his first time in the swings. MonkeyBoy enjoyed having a swinging partner.

Chick-Fil-A was offering free meals to those who dressed up as cows and MonkeyMan had to work late, so I dressed MonkeyBoyToo in white with black spots and MonkeyBoy in black with white spots plus a tail. Can’t beat free dinner plus time in their air-conditioned playscape.

We also did a little grocery shopping. MonkeyBoy was overjoyed to share the cart with his little brother.
